Apple iPhone makes Apple the world’s third largest smartphone maker

Apple might be new to the mobile phone market. Apple iPhone might be their only product in the market today. But the sales of this product is good enough to make Apple the world’s third largest smartphone supplier.

Even more amazing is the fact that Apple currently sells the iPhone in just four nations and that too with pretty expensive two year long contracts.

Market sources claim that Apple shipped 2,320,840 units of the iPhone in the fourth quarter of 2007 which puts it right behind Research in Motion and Nokia in the smartphone segment. They are incidentally now selling more smartphones than Motorola!

Pete Cunningham, Canalys senior analyst added: “When you consider that it launched part way through the year, with limited operator and country coverage, and essentially just one product, Apple has shown very clearly that it can make a difference and has sent a wake-up call to the market leaders.”
